Elizabeth “Lizzie” Bell is a typical, 18-year-old girl. Lizzie loves being with her friends, dancing, traveling and fashion! But she was born with one of the rarest diseases in the world, Diamond Blackfan Anemia. There are fewer than 1000 diagnosed cases of DBA in the world. Miss Lizzie has been “transfuse dependent” almost from birth.  Donated blood keeps Lizzie alive.

Because there are so few of these individuals, Diamond Blackfan Anemia is categorized as “life-threatening”. Today, with only 10% of her marrow left, Lizzie awaits a marrow transplant.

Team Lizzie Bell

Team Lizzie Bell is the Single Voice™ for children whose lives are dependent on blood and marrow donations. TLB is dedicated to raising awareness about blood & marrow donations for children and raising funds for education, research and advancement in pediatric hematology.

Sharing the Mission

On March 22, 2009, Lizzie’s story was featured on ABC’s Extreme Makeover Home Edition including a photo shoot in Seventeen Magazine (May 2009) and article encouraging teens to donate blood. Fellow American Red Cross celebrity ambassador, Miley Cyrus was also featured in this issue, sharing the message with teens to stay healthy and donate blood for other kids. June 2010 Lizzie produced a video message for kids on Miley’s “Get Ur Good On” to promote World Blood Donor Day.

Lizzie’s message is not just about her. She creates awareness for the seven pediatric populations,  kids like her who depend on the donated blood and marrow of others. These are surgery and transplant kids; cancer and marrow failure kids; accident and burn kids, with the majority of donated blood saving the lives of our tiniest population, premature babies. Lizzie understands how important it is to tell the world to become blood and marrow donors, and to support the Pediatric Nurses, Social Workers and Child Life Specialist that help keep our young patients alive and emotionally healthy.
