What's New -
Empowered Poor Stories

Rashmiranjan Tandi

Rashmiranjan Tandi struggled to provide for his family and like many others dreamed of sending his children to a proper school. After hearing about Empowered Poor, he applied for a loan to start a mushroom farming business.

He and his family worked day and night to make their business a success. As the business grew he was able to hire two additional families, who were also struggling and concerned about their well-being. Today Rashmiranjan is the proud owner of a thriving mushroom business. He is an example of how changing the life of one person can change the landscape of an entire community.

Loan amount: 10,000 Rupees ($175)

Kumari

Kumari and her children live in a small village in the state of Orissa.  She and her husband worked hard to provide food and shelter for their family. However, her life drastically changed when her husband, who was a day laborer died of kidney failure. How was she going to survive? A friend told her about Empowered Poor’s micro-lending program and she contacted an EP representative in her area. She discussed her desire to open a small grocery store with the representative and was granted $10,000 Rupees ($175) loan to launch her dream.

She invested the loan money to rent a small shop space and purchased basic items to sell to the community. Little by little her business began to expand. She was able to save enough money to buy a small piece of land which she leases to others to grow crops. Today Kumari is able to provide for all of her family’s needs and has the joy of giving her children the education needed to break the cycle of poverty that almost destroyed their lives.

Loan amount: 10,000 Rupees ($175)

Dayabanti

Dayabanti had a meager vegetable business that was failing. She was desperate to provide for the basic needs of her family but where could she go? After meeting with an EP representative she was given a small loan. She used her money to purchase a used pull cart and purchase more items to sell vegetables in her neighborhood and nearby villages.

Little by little she was able to improve her family’s living conditions by repairing her home and finally able to afford to send her children to school. She is an inspiration to her community and is an example of how with just a small amount of money, hard work, and determination for a better future lives are changed.

Loan amount: 10,000 Rupees ($175)
